Christmas is fast approaching and our tradition of giving to those less fortunate continues with a new opportunity along with those we've supported previously.
This year we have chosen to support people who have a need to use the programs at Sponsor-A-Family (an LSS and Catholic Charities program), Avenues for Homeless Youth, and Alexandra House.
Sponsor-A-Family The LSS Transitional Housing in Minneapolis is part of the Sponsor-A-Family program sponsored jointly by LSS and Catholic Charities. We have been asked to sponsor a family of eight (mom, dad, and 6 children).
Avenues for Homeless Youth is the shelter in downtown Minneapolis that our Glen Cary youth have chosen to support. The gifts collected will be used for Christmas gifts for those at the shelter around Christmas as well as day to day needs of the youth who live there. In addition to gifts, our youth will be making fleece tie-blankets and Christmas treats to donate.
Alexandra House is a domestic violence women’s shelter in Blaine. Each holiday season a “store” is set-up for children at the shelter to choose a gift for their mother, and another “store” for mothers to choose a gift for each of their children. They wrap the gifts and give them to each other as part of their holiday celebration at the shelter. The gifts we donate will be displayed in the "stores", and items not chosen as gifts will be made available to families in need as they move on to safe housing.
Christmas Stockings - We will be making, decorating and filling Christmas stockings for the youth at Avenues for Homeless Youth. Watch for a chance to take and decorate a stocking or two. A list of “stocking stuffers” needed is available near the gift tags.
If you can help make someone’s Christmas just a little bit brighter, please select a gift tag (or 2 or 3) from the board in the Narthex, purchase the requested gift, and return the gift to Glen Cary no later than Sunday, Dec. 7. Or, you can make a donation and someone else will do the shopping for you! Just make your check out to Glen Cary and write “Christmas Giving” on the memo line, or use one of the envelopes in the pews and write “Christmas Giving” on it.
We have much when we compare ourselves to those served by these programs.
